Description

These three 20 minute modules aim to increase the confidence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners to educate clients and community members about high blood pressure and how to manage it. Participants will gain knowledge about risk factors for high blood pressure, common blood pressure medicines and how they work, and learn ways to reduce the risk for developing cardiovascular complications.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module you should be able to:

Module 1 – Assessing for risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Explain cardiovascular disease and its risk factors to help clients understand the link between risk factors and heart attack or stroke.
  • Identify at risk groups who should be offered cardiovascular risk assessment.
  • Explain the importance of annual health checks which include cardiovascular risk screening, to help clients understand how to manage risk.
  • Communicate confidently with your clients about cardiovascular risk.

Module 2 – Managing cardiovascular risk – medicines for high blood pressure

  • Explain to your community members about high blood pressure and how it can lead to heart attack or stroke.
  • Remind community members why having a health check every year is important even if they aren’t feeling sick.
  • Talk to your community about daily things they can do to help manage high blood pressure and prevent their health getting worse.

Module 3 – Managing cardiovascular risk – blood pressure

  • List the different types of medicines for high blood pressure and explain how they work.
  • Tell your community about the side effects of blood pressure medicine and how to manage them.
  • Explain to your community that some blood pressure medicines don’t mix with other medicines. .
